Week 14
Daffodils, jonquils, hyacinth, muscari, snowballs, snowdrops, and early, mid, and late tulips all sprang into bloom at once. My garden has never been so full this time of year. Deciding how to spend my time in the garden is glorious, magical, and a bit overwhelming. Do I tidy the beds, photograph, harvest, or arrange? I’m doing my best to incorporate all of these tasks in moderation. Once I stop the urge to document and sit with them, I notice the bounty of color with every turn. Even a reflection in the window captures the color and movement behind me.
Week 13 recap
I am experimenting with building good soil, breaking leaves down, and composting quickly. I picked up a 1/2-yard garden mix, a 50/50 blend of topsoil and compost. Instead of cleaning leaves out of the beds, I am top-dressing them with the garden mix, hoping it will help break down the leaves underneath faster. I raked leaves from the yard's corners into beds that needed more soil, covered them with the mix, and then covered my compost pile. I'm doing this to beds with perennials only; if I plant anything new this year, I must dig below the leaf layer.
